“Journey (a noun): something suggesting travel or passage from one place to another”
What is life but a journey? One consumed with twists and turns, highs and lows, smiles and tears. Though involuntary, I can not deny the power of the journey that Hodgkin's Lymphoma has taken me on; the journey that having cancer has essentially and unequivocally rewarded me with.
Obviously while going through it, I felt cheated. Why me? The unchanging hand of God chose a young girl from Compton who loved dancing, singing, modeling and being active and made her bedridden and unstable. I could not understand it, but now I see what I was meant to be. An inspiration to others.
Inspirational/Motivational Speaking has become a part of me. The looks on the faces of children who think their dreams are unobtainable, that think because of where they come from or what they have been through they cannot be who they feel they are meant to be. I take such pride in dismissing any and all myths that young women and men have been told and believed, that they are inferior because of where they come from or the color of their skin, because of their disabilities or their status in life.
I know now and understand that I witnessed the inside of my hospital room, so that I can be a witness to the generations to come. The undeniable evidence that a young black girl from Compton who had cancer and everything stripped from her, can still go on to be someone great.
